How to play
The Anchoring Dance

(copyright Eileen Quinn, 1997)

Verse rhythm:

1  +  2  +  3  +  4  +
d  d  u  d  d   u  d  u

Chorus rhythm:

1  +  2  +  3  +  4  +
d      d  u      u   d  u

The top row of numbers counts out the beats in a measure.
d = downstroke
u = upstroke

In the verse, where there are two downstrokes in a row, I play the first one with my fingers and the second with my thumb (for a syncopated feel).

VERSE
 D                               G              D
Capable cruisers in a sturdy little boat
 D                                      A7       D
Mastering the challenges of living afloat
 D                                           G
Know what you're doing, do it all by the book
       D                                            A7
So how come you lose it when you drop the hook?
          G                         A7             D
And a little disagreement rises to a shout
 D                                  G           D
All the other boats get binoculars out
 G                                  D
Wouldn't be anchoring if nobody rants
                 G                      D             A7              D      G   D  A7
When they do, do, do, do, do, do the anchoring dance

CHORUS
 D           G                    D         G
Ease to starboard, then hard to port
G                               A7
Throttle down, but you come up short
G              D            A7            D
Up on the foredeck, see them prance
                 G                      D             A7             D     G   D   A7
When they do, do, do, do, do, do the anchoring dance...
